How Belief Affects the Law Of Attraction

Science + mass media

Recent scientific findings, combined with the power of the Internet and other forms of mass media, have generated a huge amount of interest in the entire field of conscious manifestation and the law of attraction. It truly is a global phenomenon.

The concept of abundance appeals to everyone, for obvious reasons. The very thought of being able to tap into a limitless source to provide that abundance is almost irresistible. Because being of this irresistible, a degree of caution is appropriate.

There are a lot of people jumping on the Law of Attraction bandwagon. Many of them are extremely qualified and quite capable of coaching others to combine the power of visualization with the ability to take purposeful action toward creating a life of abundance. Unfortunately, such a lucrative and wide-open field is also attracting those who are only interested in their own financial growth. I am not here to point any fingers or rain on anybody’s parade. I just want to encourage you to use sound judgment when deciding whose advice to listen to, or pay for.
So, here’s the big question:

With so many people applying the Law of attraction as they understand it, why have so few of them been able to manifest what they really want?

Obviously, there’s been a serious lack of results. Otherwise there would not be any market for follow-up products.

How many secrets are there behind “The Secret” anyway?

One simple reason the so called Law of Attraction fails to work for so many people is…(Drum roll please)
Limiting beliefs!

The Role of Your Subconscious Mind: Your subconscious mind is responsible for executing the incredibly powerful mental programs that run every aspect of your life. These programs are automatically carried out by your subconscious, without any need for your conscious input. They are based on your deep seated positive and negative beliefs and are what determine your overall mindset, emotional vibration, habitual actions and ultimately, the circumstances of your life.

What are Negative Beliefs? Simply put, negative beliefs are those limiting beliefs about yourself or any aspect of life, that prevent you from achieving success. When consciously creating your reality, no single factor is more important than your beliefs. This is because thought power underlies the conscious creation process and so, it stands to reason, that the source of your habitual thoughts is the single most important determining factor of your reality. And what is the primary source of your habitual thoughts? It is your set of personal beliefs, with your positive beliefs contributing to your success, and your negative beliefs preventing it.

Science is already showing us that observation invariably affects whatever’s being observed. You can do experiments in a high school science lab that demonstrate that how you observe matter and energy changes how they behave, even if everything else is the same. You probably have, it’s called the double slit experiment.

One of the bigshots of 20th century physics, Dr. John Wheeler, focused his studies on the biggest question of all: why does the universe even exist? In his work he found that he couldn’t escape the conclusion that for the the universe to even exist, something was required something to observe it. Consciousness and the universe were fundamentally interrelated. You couldn’t have one without the other.

His theories had strange implications — that the universe didn’t exist before you began looking at it, but it looks as though it did; that observers create the observed; that nothing exists except as it is relative to whatever is aware of it.

In 1984 an experiment based on Wheeler’s work demonstrated that how we choose to observe a particle determines not only what it is doing now, but what it did to get to where it is now. This means present-moment observations can change the past too. If you’re skeptical, read this article about it, and enjoy at least a healthy chin-scratch.

Now, none of this proves that visualizing a pile of money will necessarily recruit the entire universe to deliver that pile of money to you, but it does show us that consciousness itself can affect the behavior of the world outside it.

This leaves the door open for all kinds of possibilities for the question of what we are creating when our minds are at work expecting, evaluating and visualizing. Redirecting ourselves to a different future is easy to imagine, but perhaps with our intentions we’re actively creating a different present, or a different past. It’s no longer as easy to dismiss as it once was, when we thought time and space and consciousness were much simpler than they really are.

The theory is a rather simple one, whatever you focus on expands. In other words, if you dwell on good things then you get more of what you dwell on, and if you dwell on “bad” things then you get more of them. Simply put, what you focus on becomes more of your reality.

I know, that is a very simple explanation but really, that's all there is to it. We don't need to complicate it with more errors, it has enough on its own.

The question is, is this true? If I focus on something will I get more of that something? The answer is yes and no. You will get more of that something if your belief system supports you in getting more of it however, if you have beliefs that say otherwise they will win every single time. That's the essence of Quimby's quote.

“At first I found that my own thoughts affected the subject, and not only my thought but my belief. I found that my thoughts were one thing and my belief another. If I really believed in anything, the effect would follow whether I was thinking of it or not.”

Take the above segment of Quimby's statement. He's telling us that our thoughts do have an effect thus the law of attraction would seem to hold true. However, he's telling us even more about our beliefs.

The way I like to paraphrase this idea is as follows, regardless of my thoughts my beliefs always come about. This makes it simple and clear. No matter what thoughts I hold my beliefs ultimately rule the day. They are the program of the mind which is the creative mechanism of the universe. It's just that simple.

I can think good health thoughts all day but if I truly believe that I'm dying of cancer then guess what? Cancer will grow and flourish and I will die from cancer sure enough.

This brings us to the paradox of the "law of attraction." The idea generally is, stay focused on what you want. Well, that's a great start but if you stay focused on something that you believe you cannot have then you are affirming that you cannot have it. In other words, every time you say “I'm rich” your subconscious is saying, “no, you are poor.” And the subconscious wins! You are simply affirming what you believe. This is the reason why affirmations do not work for so many. Every time they say their affirmation they end up affirming what they truly believe, and that usually goes against the goal of the affirmation.

How then do we get rid of a belief or change it? That's the question. For Quimby it was a matter of understanding your error (belief) so that Wisdom (God consciousness) could erase the belief and free you from your error. This does work but requires diligent study, self observation, and controlling one's thoughts & mind.

Other methods work as well. Such methods as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and its many cousins can help knock down the emotional component of a belief which will allow you to “re-write” the memory. There are writing techniques, visualization techniques, and many more that can help. The truth is, they all take effort. You can't just hold a pose and expect your belief system to change, unless you really believe that that will work for you.

Much of the work I've been doing over the past years has been focused on changing beliefs. It's not an easy process. It takes work but it can be done.

If you have attempted to use the law and have not seen the results you’ve been craving, don’t get discouraged. We have all been pre-programed and inundated with bad paradigms that take time and persistence to change. The subconscious mind moves slowly and in order to effect lasting change one must be willing to put in the required effort. Your subconscious mind was programmed over a period of many years and will take time and effort to repair.
